Claremorris
secured their second ever Quigley Cup

Claremorris
secured their second ever Quigley Cup when they had a deserved win over a
gallant Bangor Hibs side in today’s (Saturday) Final at Milebush Park.
Claremorris

Bangor
Hibs 3
Despite
the “greyish and dullish” afternoon, both Claremorris and Bangor Hibs
gave their respective supporters something to cheer about in an
entertaining final that produced 8 goals, and some fine individual
performances from both sides. The
Quigley Cup, which is one of the longest running, and most coveted
competitions in Schoolboys / Youths football, always seems to offer
something special on Final Day – and the 2010 final was no exception
with 8 goals, two penalties, a hat-trick hero and plenty of goalmouth
action.
Both
sides lined out as expected but Bangor appeared to start the game with
only the one up front in the lively and impressive Darren McManamon,
whereas Claremorris looked to have a far more solid unit playing a 4 -4 -2
formation from the very start with Darren Coen and Gareth Gleeson in the
striking roles.
Claremorris
entered the game as favourites and gave a sign of things to come when Darren
Coen was fed a long ball from defence – he ran into space, and
his left footed effort from 20 yards went high and wide after just one
minute. Some 7 minutes later
Coen was again on hand to receive from John Hutton, and this time the
striker shot the ball past Martin Rowland in the Bangor goal to give his
side the lead.
Claremorris
were the dominant side in the early stages with both Coen and Gleeson
causing many problems for the
Bangor
defence. Claremorris had a
strong grip on the midfield exchanges and the midfield quartet of Shally,
Stratton, Hutton and Pilbrow were very much to the fore.
Claremorris full back Jim Shaughnessy was most effective in
supporting his midfield with many fine runs down the left flank and
combining well with Andrew Shally in the process.
Bangor Hibs on the other hand were only able to offer token
resistance with their only
attempt in the opening period to come from the hard working and effective
Darren McManamon when his 25 yard effort was easily held by Grant in the
Claremorris goal.
It
looked like as if Claremorris were going to increase their lead in the 15th
minute when John Hutton set up Jim Shaughnessy with a short free kick some
20 yards from goal but with Shaughnessy powering down on goal, his shot
from 8 yards was well saved by Rowland on this occasion.
Rowland however could do nothing about Claremorris’s second goal
when a delightful cross from Andrew Shally was headed home to the back of
the net by Darren Coen
to give his side a 2 – 0 lead after 18 minutes.
Bangor
Hibs responded some two minutes later when a fine pass by Shane Murphy
found Darren McManamon some 20 yards from goal – McManamon coolly
delivered the ball past Grant, and brought his side back into the game
with a fine goal. With this
goal, Bangor Hibs found a new freshness with more possession, and were
beginning to play some good football in the process – Darragh Carey was
providing a better quality ball from the back and Shane Murphy was
distributing the ball well on the right side of midfield – McManamon up
front was beginning to cause the Claremorris defence a degree of trouble
with his pace and skill, and Declan McManamon and Liam Devlin were putting
in the challenges in the midfield battle.
The
game appeared to be settling for the 2 – 1 score-line at half time up
until the 45th minute when it appeared to this observer that
Bangor were somewhat unfortunate in giving away a third goal on the stroke
of half time. Rowland in the
Bangor
goal had come off his line, and gathered the ball – the goalkeeper
appeared to have been slightly impeded by an opponent in his distribution
of the ball to one of his own players.
His throw out landed near the feet of an opponent who in turn
passed to Darren Coen – Rowland was unable to hold and gather Coen's
effort, and the ball ended up in the back of the net to give the
Claremorris side a 3 – 1 lead going into the break, and Darren Coen
having secured his hat-trick in the process.
The
second half had a similar pattern to the first half with Claremorris
looking the more dangerous side, and the team likely to score.
A long through ball from the back by Paul Mannion found Coen in a
forward position – Coen set up James Stretton on goal but his weak
attempt was saved easily by Rowland after 55 minutes.
Some 4 minutes later Stretton was involved again when he set up
Gareth Gleeson - on this occasion Rowland brought off an excellent save by
touching the ball around the post and out for a corner when it seemed
certain that Gleeson would score.
Some
three minutes later Bangor were handed a gift and a life-line when
Claremorris centre back Paul
Mannion was adjudged by referee Pat Foley to have deliberately handled the
ball in the penalty area whilst under no pressure – Darragh
Carey shot home the resultant penalty kick in fine aplomb to
bring the score-line back to 3 – 2.
Claremorris were to respond immediately however, and increased
their lead when some fine interplay between James Stretton and Gareth
Gleeson saw the latter score a fine goal after 64 minutes.
In
an all action period in the game, Bangor Hibs were very unlucky not to
score – Matt Burke's powerful header from Darragh Carey’s free kick
looked goal-bound only to strike the upright, and be cleared to safety by
a defender in the 66th minute.
Bangor
were reluctant to make any early changes in personnel, and maybe should
have moved Darragh Carey into the midfield role at an earlier stage.
McManamon up front was starved of decent possession in the second
half and the
Bangor
side posed little additional threat except from set pieces. The final
quarter did however see
Bangor
with more possession and Carey being the major influence.
Some fine interplay between McManamon, Carey and Conroy saw the
latter’s effort held by Grant in the Claremorris goal.
Any
hope of a recovery by Bangor Hibs was dampened when wonderful play between
James Stretton, substitute Steve Coen, and Darren Coen saw the latter
slide his effort past Rowland for his side’s fifth goal, and his own
fourth in the 85th minute.
Bangor
Hibs got a further consolation goal in the dying minutes of the game when
Paul Mannion once again handled the ball in the penalty area – the
resultant spot kick was delivered home once again in fine style by Darragh
Carey to give us a final score-line of 5 – 3 in favour of the
Claremorris side.
Claremorris
were a well balanced side with some fine individual performances from Jim
Shaughnessy, Andrew Shally, James Stretton,
John Hutton, and Darren Coen.
Bangor Hibs were well served by Darragh Carey, Shane Murphy, David
Conroy and Darren McManamon.

Hutton the two-goal hero
in U18 FAI Cup
By Anthony Hennigan
CONN RANGERS 1 CLAREMORRIS 2
THE best team won, but only just.
Indeed, Claremorris were reliant on Conn Rangers midfielder David Burke
shooting a gilt edged opportunity over the bar from 12 yards just two
minutes from full-time before eventually securing their place in the next
round of the FAI U-18 Cup.
The visitors to Knockmore last Sunday could have been at least two goals
to the good, possibly even three or four, by the time they fell behind to
a 25th minute Keith Ruttledge strike. The goal was scored from what was
only Rangers’ second chance of the game, the first having arrived just
moments earlier when Cathal Faughnan’s deflected volley resulted in the
corner from which Ruttledge’s opportunity arose.
Swinging outwards from the right, Mikey Burke’s cornerkick landed at the
feet of Justin Rice who had time to tee up David McHale for a shot from
the edge of the area. McHale’s effort was parried by ‘keeper Grant who
was powerless to prevent Ruttledge from drilling home the rebound. And all
this after John Hutton, from a free-kick, Conor Kelly, with too weak of a
flick to Darren Coen’s through-ball, Coen himself, shooting just wide
from 20 yards, and Nicky Pilbrow had all failed to earn Claremorris the
lead.
It was Pilbrow who had gone closest to scoring, in the 22nd minute, when
an intricate passing build-up ended with the midfielder’s thundering
long-range shot looking destined for the top corner only for Conn
‘keeper Ronan Canavan to leap left and spectacularly push the ball past
the post.
With two key players absent due to junior team commitments and only the
bare 11 players available, the goal, when it arrived three minutes after,
instilled great confidence into Conn Rangers. Keith Ruttledge tried his
luck from 25 yards and although David Grant hadn’t to work too hard to
keep that effort out, he was tested to the maximum in the 35th minute when
diving full-stretch to prevent Cathal Faughnan’s sweetest of left foot
volleys from sneaking into the bottom left corner.
It was Claremorris, however, who finished the first half much the stronger
and who were rightly aggrieved when John Hutton was denied a goal when
referee Aiden Nevin failed to play an advantage. Still, there was no
excuse that Claremorris didn’t equalise when Gareth Gleeson’s
follow-up header to a James Shaughnessy free-kick that was turned onto the
crossbar by Ronan Canavan, was directed straight back into the arms of the
grateful goalkeeper from point-blank range.
The chasers had signalled their intent nonetheless and it took them only
two minutes of the second half to create another point-blank opportunity
for Gleeson but amazingly he headed Nicky Pilbrow’s cross against the
crossbar and Conn Rangers remained in front but not for long.
The concession of a free-kick to the right of their penalty area had
Rangers defending deep, and no amount of bodies in the box could prevent
John Hutton from glancing James Stretton’s delivery into the bottom
corner of Canavan’s goal, with 49 minutes just elapsed.
Both teams were well-matched at this stage, in both scoring terms and on
the balance of play, but only half-chances for Darren Coen, for
Claremorris, and Cathal Faughan, for Rangers, presented themselves before
Claremorris struck for what would prove the match-winning goal, in the
70th minute.
James Stretton, patrolling the left wing all game long, dragged the ball
back to his captain, John Hutton, who, steeping inside his marker, coolly
allowed the ball roll across his body before opening up to shoot off his
right boot with bullet like accuracy to the bottom right corner.
Relieved to have finally taken the lead they deserved, Claremorris looked
the more composed of the teams in the latter stages, and at all times
tried to implement an attractive, passing style of play, however, all
their good work almost unravelled in the 88th minute.
David Burke, who had battled superbly in the centre of the park all game
long, found himself in space inside the Claremorris penalty area but with
sight of goal, he blazed his side’s last chance to force extra-time over
the crossbar.
CONN RANGERS: Ronan Canavan, Thomas Clarke, James Langan, Kevin Mills,
Daryl Moran, David Burke, Cathal Faughnan, Justin Rice, Keith Ruttledge,
David McHale, Mikey Burke.
CLAREMORRIS: David Grant, Conor Brennan, James Shaughnessy, Aidan Butler,
Paul Mannion, Nicky Pilbrow, John Hutton, Conor Kelly, Gareth Gleeson,

Claremorris AFC win Welcome Inn Hotel Premier Division

Claremorris turned on the style in Concannon Park on Sunday to record
an eight goals to one victory over luckless Kilmore in their final home
league game of a remarkable season.
Brian Gallagher was the star of the show, scoring four of the goals and
claiming one assist in a fine overall display.
But there were others to catch the eye in what was a dominant display over
the Erris men.
Kilmore travelled with the bare 11 players as the squad was depleted due
to injury and other commitments.
They shut the home side out for just over 10 minutes before Gallagher
opened the scoring, lobbing the ball over the out-rushing Kilmore 'keeper
Gary Keane and into the net.
Soon it was 2-0, the lanky striker with a simple side-footed finish after
he rounded Keane to give the perfect conclusion to Danny Broderick's
superb through ball.
Gallagher had secured his hat trick by the 20th minute when he took down
Andrew Shally's excellent cross-field delivery, turned his marker and shot
confidently past Keane to make it 3-0.
The striker had another before half time, but not before Jan Rada had made
it 4-0 in the 36th minute. The ball went in past Keane at the near post as
Czech midfielder Rada got a touch to Kevin Costello's cross from the right
wing.
On the stroke of half time Gallagher rose majestically to head in
Broderick's corner, ensuring the home side of a 5-0 lead at the break.
Kilmore found some energy for the start of the second half and after
Darren Keane forced Clarmorris 'keeper Shane Macken into a save in the
very first minute, they pulled a goal back when Tommy Murphy finished well
when he latched on to a long through ball.
However, the goal only served to reawaken Claremorris. After a number of
missed chances, Danny Broderick restored the five-goal lead in the 61st
minute when he finished with aplomb to the bottom right corner of the
Kilmore goal from Gallagher's low delivery from the left.
There were two more goals for the home side to celebrate before the end,
Andrew Shally and substitute Fergal O'Connor drilling in shots from the
edge of the area, the former going high and the latter going low but both
with the same result.
It capped a fine season for the south Mayo club, and captain Niall
Kitching was presented with the Premier Division trophy after the game by
Mayo League chairman, Padraig McHale.

Late Gallagher Goal seals win for Claremorris
Defending champions Claremorris and last
year's runners-up Iorras Aontaithe B served up a feast of goals in
Sunday's Tuohy Cup final at Milebush.
In the end Claremorris successfully defended their title, and for the
Premier Division table toppers it could well be the first part of a super
double with the league title firmly in their sights.
But Iorras, who occupy bottom spot in the Premier, pushed Claremorris all
the way and made them earn their win.
Indeed Brian Gallagher's winning goal in the penultimate minute of extra
time was the first time Claremorris led in the game.
The teams entered the final in direct contrast to last year. Then,
Claremorris were bottom of the division and Iorras
were near the top, but the south Mayo men's
win in that game started a surge that lifted them clear of the relegation
zone.
Now, they are a team transformed and, barring a disaster, they'll be
playing Super League football next season.
Iorras, on the other hand, are finding it tougher this year but are not
adrift at the foot of the table and can avoid the drop.
They started Sunday's game as if they had something to prove. The
Belmullet-based side took the lead after just 14 minutes when Thomas
McAndrew curled a wonderful shot past Claremorris 'keeper Shane Macken
from the left apex of the penalty area to the opposite bottom corner.
Claremorris were nervous from the start and the concession of a second
goal just three minutes later did nothing to quell that uneasiness. This
time McAndrew was the creator, swinging in a corner that Jason Boylan
powerfully headed to the Claremorris net.
Stung by the poor start, Claremorris finally began to play the football
they're capable of. But the goal chances that fell the way of Kevin Butler
all went a-begging, the winger wayward with his shooting after breaking
free on three occasions on the right side.
Iorras' chances started to dry up after an attempted lob by McAndrew from
35 yards midway through the half and another long distance attempt by Sean
O'Donnell edging towards the half-hour mark.
But they maintained the 2-0 lead up to half time and for 13 minutes of the
second half.
Finally, however, the Claremorris pressure paid off, Brian Gallagher
heading past Iorras 'keeper Harry Reilly from six yards out after Danny
Broderick picked him out with a fine cross from the left.
They continued to pile on the pressure but Iorras were holding out. The
north Mayo team went over 50 minutes without a shot on target and while
substitute Daniel Farrell changed that with seven to go, Macken was behind
it all the way.
When the equaliser came, in the last minute of the game, it was worth
waiting for. Gallagher crossed deep into the area from the left and
Broderick, lurking behind everyone, lined up a bicycle kick – and then
executed it with perfect technique. Reilly got his hands to the ball but
couldn't stop it crossing the line.
Claremorris, through Gallagher and Butler, had chances to win it in normal
time. The best was Galllagher's second chance in the third minute of
added-on time when Kevin Costello nodded down to him but he side-footed
the ball wide from close range.
Iorras, so long on the defensive, stunned Claremorris by taking the lead
again in the very first minute of extra time. Jason Boylan broke free into
the area and squeezed the ball into goal off Macken's hands, establishing
a 3-2 advantage.
So Claremorris had to work back into the game all over again. Credit to
them, they didn't panic and started to play the ball around with purpose,
as before. Their cause wasn't helped, however, by the forced withdrawal of
Danny Broderick due to injury. With all three subs used, they had to carry
on with just 10 men.
Iorras were reduced to 10 for similar reasons just into the second period
of extra time, Robert Carey having to cry off due to a knock.
Claremorris pounced in the fourth minute, substitute Jan Rada with a low
drive from outside the box that squirmed into goal off Reilly's hands, a
shot the goalkeeper could have stopped.
The winner came in the second last minute of the game when Costello played
in Gallagher through the middle. The Claremorris striker took the ball in
his stride, skipped around Reilly in the Iorras goal and coolly slotted to
the net, winning the cup for his team.

A U-12s one step away from Division 1 title.
Claremorris U12A soccer squad is one step away from being crowned Division
1 champions after a convincing 4-0 victory over Ballyglass A in
Claremorris last Friday evening.
Claremorris
almost scored right from the kick-off when Daniel Huane came close and
they continued in a similar vein throughout the remainder of the first
half and despite dominating most of the half and creating several goal
chances the match was scoreless at half time. The deadlock was broken
about eight minutes into the second half when the ever dependable Conor
Diskin scored from a Brian McGuinness corner. Simon Vahey made it 2-0 five
minutes later with a superbly place shot to the top of the net. Daniel
Huane added a third some four minutes later after a superb pass from
Daniel Murphy and a second from Simon Vahey a couple of minutes later put
the game well beyond Ballyglass reach. This was Claremorris’s eighth
straight league win on the trot and they now only need one point from
their final two games to be declared Mayo Division 1 League Champions
Claremorris
U12A continue winning ways.
Claremorris
U12A soccer squad continue their winning ways this week with a 5-4 victory
over Fahy Rovers in the second round of the Mayo Cup. In a very exciting
game, a very lacklustre start by Claremorris saw then 3-0 down after only
4 minutes and 4-0 down at 8 minutes. The blistering pace set by Fahy
continued until mid way through the first half when Claremorris finally
began to gain their composure. Two goals late in the first half from
Daniel Huane and Liam Walsh left the score at 4-2 at half-time. The second
half was an altogether different affair with Claremorris asserting
themselves and dominating from there on. At the halfway point in the
second half, the score was level at 4-4 with goals from Conor Diskin and a
second for Daniel Huane. The winner proved elusive until about 4 minutes
from time when a brilliant chipped finish from Brian Quinn after some
great work by Liam Walsh saw Claremorris take a 5-4 lead, which they never
relinquished. Claremorris continue their league campaign next week at home
to Snugboro.

U-12A reach half way with maximum points.
Claremorris
U-12As have reached the half way stage in Division 1 of the Mayo League
with maximum points after a close 3-2 away victory over Ballyglass on
Friday night. Claremorris went into a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to goals
by Conor Dixon and Daniel Huane, however the second half was a much more
even affair with Ballyglass bringing it back to 2-1 before another
Claremorris goal from Conor Dixon made it 3-1. Claremorrris seemed to be
coasting to a comfortable victory when a mix up in the Claremorris defence
let Ballyglass in for a second with about 5 mins to go. At 3-2 the final
minutes saw some sustained Ballyglass pressure, but Claremorris held on
for what was in the end a hard earned victory. Claremorris’s next match
is a difficult away fixture to Iorrais Aointainte next Friday.

The 2010 season kicked off on the hottest
day of the year to date, an achievement of little note considering the
arctic conditions that had beset the nation for the previous four months.
But on Sunday in Abbeytown the temperatures soared to heights that were
completely unimaginable five days previously when the A and B teams
convened here for training in the torrential rain and fierce winds. So
with the pitch freshly recovered from its Winter ordeal, the two teams
full of fresh enthusiasm for the new season and all the conditions
necessary to ensure a perfect setting for the encounter it was remarkable
how quickly hope unravelled for the home team. With barely two minutes on
the clock they found themselves a goal behind and shell-shocked. After a
bright attacking start that had seen them focussed on scoring at the other
end they conceded possession to the visitors and with one sweeping
counter-attack their opponents had scored with their first attack of the
game when Brian Gallagher headed in Danny Broderick’s cross from the
left flank. The goal heralded a deeper threat within the south Mayo men.
They had contested three friendly matches in the previous week alone while
the Deelsiders had failed to partake in even one. Consequently, the
superior preparation was bound to pay dividends and over the duration of
the game this became apparent. The hosts struggled to play cohesive
football and rarely threatened on goal while their adversaries had a
number of chances. Broderick struck a long distance shot from outside the
penalty area that sailed just over the crossbar. At another stage he
arrived at the exact right moment to meet a cross from the right wing but
he inexplicably stubbed the ball over the bar from two yards out. But it
appeared inevitable that the lead would be doubled and after twenty
minutes it was when Kevin Butler scored. Sean Hiney came to the home
side’s rescue later in the half when he magnificently cleared a goal
bound shot off the line. Crossmolina had their moments in front of goal
too with Joe Kearns integral to most of their good work. He struck two
good long range efforts that tested Claremorris goalie Shane Macken. Paul
Flaherty also came close to notching one for the hosts when he flashed a
rising drive from the left side of the penalty box that just cleared the
bar. But in general it was a poor opening half from the hosts and they
retreated to the dressing room with more questions than answers.
The second half began much better for the
local eleven as they settled into their stride and applied some concerted
pressure on the opposing goal. However, after ten minutes the wind was
taken out of their sails when Butler tenaciously burrowed his way down the
right wing before drilling in a cross from near the by-line that navigated
its way between post and keeper to register a third and fateful goal for
Claremorris. Less than ten minutes later the nail was put in the coffin
when a scramble within the home penalty area culminated in Brian Galalgher
being upended and Michael Cafferty was adjudged to have prevented a clear
goalscoring opportunity so he was dismissed. Butler stepped up to convert
the penalty kick, completing his hat trick for the day and rendering the
remainder of the game completely meaningless. Stewart Griffin had suffered
a head injury prior to the final goal being scored but had continued to
play with a bandage stemming the flow of blood. But he was forced to
concede defeat to the wound and was withdrawn from the game, just as his
team had to accept that they too could not win this battle. Claremorris
proceeded to coast through the final throes of the match and Broderick
even found the time to win a wager for exhibitionism that he had placed
prior to the season's commencement. That seemed like an awful long time
ago for the vanquished hosts as they trudged off the pitch with the sun
still beating down from on high, but the optimism it seemed to offer less
than two hours ago had long since disappeared.
